We continue our journey towards the Loire Valley this morning. On arrival we visit Abbaye de Fontevraud, the 12th century resting place of Henry II,Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lion Heart. We continue to the 3* Best Western Hotel Adagio at Saumur for a four night stay. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening, and on Day 4 of the tour. The remaining two nights are on a bed and breakfast basis, so that we can dine on these nights in some of the excellent local restaurants within a short walking distance of the hotel.
A guided tour of the medieval quarter of Tours, a showcase of Gothic architecture, takes in Place Plumereau with its 15th century half-timbered townhouses, the stunning Cathedrale St Gatien and the Basilique de St- Martin, a neo-Byzantine basilica on the site of previous churches built in honour of St Martin, Bishop of Tours in the 4th century. This afternoon we visit the gardens at Château de Valmer, a beautiful estate in the heart of the Vouvray Vineyard in Touraine. During our visit, we also enjoy a tour and a wine tasting at the castle vineyard.
We visit this morning, for an audio guided tour, Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, one of the earliest of the Italianate style Renaissance châteaux of the Loire. This afternoon we visit Château du Rivau. Having a unique blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture, Château du Rivau is a beautifully restored French castle set in the heart of Touraine. Although one of the lesser known Loire valley castles, this French château seems to come straight out of a fairy tale, thanks to its imposing keep, protective drawbridge and glorious gardens. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening.
This morning we visit Château de Chenonceaux for an audio guided tour. Perhaps the most elegant of all châteaux in the Loire Valley, Chenonceaux is renowned for the arches that carry it across the water. We continue to Château de Villandry where we have another audio guided tour: the Chateau is famous 16th century three tiered gardens comprising the pond, the decorative gardens and the kitchen garden.
Today we leave Saumur and travel to Rouen. En route we visit the Parc Flora de la Source, a magnificent 35 hectare landscaped garden divided into wonderful themed areas. We continue to the 3* Mercure Hotel Champs De Mars in Rouen for an overnight stay.
